Nigel Rennie, now happily retired and writing stories of his homeland in Scotland.

Sit back in your seats and enjoy the story of possibly the most courageous and outrageous family in Scotland during the 13th and 14th centuries.

NIGEL RENNIE

Award Winning Author

The only writing accolade I’ve received thus far is a modest acknowledgment from my brother, who admitted he “quite likes” my latest book. Considering his usual literary preferences lean towards Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, this amounts to high praise indeed.

Becoming an award-winning author has never been my primary aim. Rather, I find joy in writing and in sharing my deep appreciation for the intricate tapestry of Scottish history. Prior to delving into these books, my understanding was largely shaped by the romantic songs and poetry of my homeland, as well as the teachings of individuals who were either misinformed or had consulted unreliable sources.

Scotland’s history is marked by centuries of violence, with a small cadre of fiercely determined men defending it against much larger aggressors. Among them, the Douglas family stands out for their exceptional valor in safeguarding their homeland—a story that I believe deserves to be recounted and celebrated.

Granny Kempock

My First Book – 2020

“Granny Kempock” is a compelling series of tales set in Scotland, spanning from ancient times to the present day, all intricately linked by the enigmatic presence of the famed standing stone, Granny Kempock. These stories weave together accounts of witchcraft, mysterious occurrences, and unexplainable events, offering a fascinating glimpse into the rich tapestry of Scottish folklore and history.

Steamers

My Second Book – 2023

“Steamers” transports readers into the captivating world of the 1960s, where tales unfold both on and off the majestic paddle steamers navigating the waters of the River Clyde. These stories offer a glimpse into the vibrant life aboard these vessels, where passengers’ journeys intertwine with the rich tapestry of the era. From heartwarming encounters to unexpected adventures, “Steamers” promises to immerse readers in a nostalgic and unforgettable voyage along the storied river.

Black Douglas Chronicles

My Third Book – 2024

After two years of intensive research, my third book, “Black Douglas Chronicles” stands proudly complete. Within its pages lies the riveting saga of perhaps the most audacious and valiant family in Scotland during the tumultuous 13th and 14th centuries. Rising to prominence through unwavering loyalty and unmatched martial skill, the Black Douglas clan’s legacy evolves from tales of courage to narratives of intrigue, betrayal, and a daring bid for the throne. Through meticulous exploration of their triumphs and trials, this chronicle unveils the captivating journey of a once noble lineage veering towards the shadows of ambition and power.

My Fourth Book – 2025

Whist researching the Douglas family, I came across many more Scottish families of the same period. Few were dull and boring and the Maxwells of Newark proved to be not only archetypal but lived much closer to my own homelands. Sir Patrick Maxwell fought wars, feuds, built his castle and was reviled and loved in unequal measure. His long suffering wife was subjected to increasing violence, thrown out of a second floor window and locked in the dungeons. Together they built and developed a legacy that lives on today.

My Fifth Book – 2025

Having written several books that require a mountain of research I decided to try my hand at writing pure fiction. Much of my time is spent in Colombia and I wanted to write a novel that described the great social divides but at the same time allows all the people to be able to reach for the stars no matter their origins. This somewhat faster paced story tells the tale of two brothers brought up apart at the extreme ends of wealth and social division in a violent country controlled by the drug barons.

My Sixth Book – 2026

Having researched so many stories surrounding Granny Kempock, I felt compelled to write a second edition and include some stories that should have been part of the first book. The result is “Granny Kempock – Daemonology” including an account of King James’s own book “Daemonology” which significantly exacerbated the witchcraft trials and tribulations of that era.

The bones of my next novel have been sketched out and the first few chapters complete. There is a way to go before publication, but I am working on it!
