Black Douglas Chronicles

Sit back in your seats and enjoy the story of possibly the most courageous and outrageous family in Scotland during the 13th and 14th centuries. They rose to fame by their loyalty and warrior prowess which gradually disintegrated over several generations into greed, treachery and an attempt to take the throne.

BIOGRAPHY

Nigel Rennie

I lived in Gourock in Scotland until about the age of 20, when I was drawn to the deep south of England, namely London.

Since then I have lived and brought up my family in Berkshire, where I still have my home. Most of my writing is done when my wife and I escape to Colombia for the winter and with a good internet connection I am ready to start my researches.

Writing about Scottish history is a daunting task. There at least three variations to each event which I classify as Contemporary (more or less at the time), Romantic (writers in the 18th century seemed to find wonderful access to family papers and files and also the time to write about the significant families), and finally the Modern historians who tend to have a less biased view on events but are a bit drab and will omit information rather than be contradicted.

I am quite open to contradiction as I am not a professional historian, but I have tried very hard to strike a balance between the three, often distinct, versions of historical events.

Feuds and vendettas in 16th century Scotland reached a peak that have rarely been surpassed in any country. How the Scots found time to fight against their mutual enemy England is difficult to imagine. They often did not use the excuse that the enemy of their enemy was their friend. Rather, the enemy was the English. Any feud that intervened was set aside for the “good of the nation”.

This story covers the period circa 1550 to 1650 and the turbulent life of Sir Patrick Maxwell of Newark. The Maxwells of Newark were relatively short-lived as a branch of the Maxwells of Pollock. Possibly due to their obscurity, little has been written about them. However, they have proven to be a typical microcosm of life in medieval Scotland. They lived through one of the greatest political and social transformations in the British Isles. This occurred when King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England and the United Kingdom.
